JPG, PNG, WebPAbout the Image Pixelator
The Image Pixelator runs entirely in your browser. Drop or select an image, drag the Block size slider from 2 to 50 pixels, and click Apply. The image is first drawn to a tiny offscreen canvas at width / blockSize by height / blockSize, then scaled back up to the full size with image smoothing disabled. Each pixel in the small canvas becomes a solid block of color in the result, producing a clean mosaic effect. Larger block sizes produce chunkier output. Download the result as a PNG. Nothing is uploaded to a server — all processing happens locally with JavaScript on your device.
How to use the pixelator
- Click the drop zone or drop an image file onto it.
- Drag the Block size slider — bigger for a chunkier mosaic.
- Click Apply to render the effect onto the image.
- Click Download to save the result, Reset to restore the original, or Clear to start over.
Frequently asked questions
What does the block size mean? Each pixel in the downsampled image maps to a block of that many pixels on each side in the output. 2 is subtle; 50 is very chunky.
What is the output format? The download is a PNG file. This preserves detail and avoids compression artifacts.
Does this tool upload my images? No. All processing happens locally in your browser. Your image never leaves your device.
Can I use this to censor faces? Yes — pixelation is a common privacy mask. For sensitive content, larger block sizes are harder to reverse.
